they more likely to help you than the American embassy

The American embassy was probably afraid you were applying for a visa.

This is a quote from the American embassy spokesperson in Beirut that was in the article I posted to harris:

"I wish I could snap my fingers and put an aircraft carrier right outside the Israeli buffer zone," Wurr said. "But it doesn't work like that."

That's exactly the attitude I or some of my friends have encountered at an American embassy. Imagine being scared and confused in bombed out Beirut, and that's the greeting you get when you contact your embassy. The spokesperson goes on to say that Americans should not be traveling to Lebanon....its not safe for them there. Well, dude, its not safe anywhere in the world for Americans these days. Tell us something we don't know.

The philosophy behind the concept of an embassy is that once you are inside their doors you are back in your own country......that the land the embassy occupies belongs to your country if not legally then in spirit. Sadly, that's not the attitude of most American embassy staff. When I went once with a Swedish friend who had lost her passport to her embassy, the embassy staff was incredibly welcoming.....providing hot tea and wafers. Within 48 hours, she had a duplicate copy of her passport. If the same thing happened to an American, you are pretty much screwed. Even getting a visa is nearly impossible under those circumstances.
