The time to have hashed out the status of the men we are holding at Guantanamo with the other civilized nations, and come up with a civilized solution, was 2001, when they were captured.

I will continue to believe until I read declassified internal documents to the contrary that we chose not to do so because we wanted to use what I call torture and what they call coercion in order to get them to rat out their co-conspirators. I don't think it's even debatable that this was the intention, I haven't yet heard anybody say they doubt this.

How about you? Do you doubt it? Do you really think we went through this elaborate breast-beating and gnashing of teeth over the status of the prisoners at Guantanamo because we were really stumped? Or was the administration looking for every loophole to get out of our ratified treaties?

(BTW, I expect to read declassified internal documents on this topic in less than 20 years, thanks to FOIA.)
