>It's possible that the truth isn't too far from what was on the falsified memos, but it really shouldn't have mattered anyway. Everyone knows Bush served in the National Guard to escape the draft. What use was it to try and dig up even more dirt on his National Guard service?

It was the Kerry campaign's reaction to the ridiculous degradations of Kerry's service in Vietnam. Not the way I would have reacted, but perfectly understandable.

>Nevertheless, the mainstream media tried, only to have it blow up in their faces due to some overzealous people with an axe to grind.

I dunno, if the memos had proven true, it would've been a story people would read about and watch on TV, right? Contrary to your opinion, the media is less about being on the "left" and more about ratings, profits, etc...

>The story quickly became the memos themselves, a phenomenon that some attributed to yet another Rove conspiracy theory

I'm not sure why you discount Rove so much... my boss spends lots of time with many Beltway insiders -- he worked in the Bush I administration and even plays on a baseball team with Rove's lawyer, and people there really wouldn't put anything past Rove.
