That could galvanize Syrian populations against us, Which IMHO is the actual goal. The neocons spelled this strategy out pretty explicitly in their New American Century material. They want Syria and Iran to be disrupted. It doesn't matter if they become democracies or just warring tribes. Unlike their "war on terror" rhetoric, they apparently feel they can contain violence to the region. The goal is to buy a generation or two worth of time to complete Israel and gain influence over the oil in the area.
