Truman used the bomb to experiment with his little new invention on the Japanese.

The only thing sure is that it killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. The rest is just conjecture.

Nagasaki was completely unnecessary. You know, there is a middle ground which is correct in the debate over whether it's okay to blame one's country for foul play. "Blame American first" people have a point. It's important to see the other side of that argument. But "never blame America" is an even more dangerous point of view. For we the people control our government and need to check and balance our government from time to time. If certain leaders do totally unethical things in our name, we have the right and obligation to remove them.

Well the Japanese attacked us first. This is used as justification for the massive destruction of civilian population centers.

That's why it was so important to link Saddam to 9-11 and Al Qaeda. It would justify the massive invasion of Iraq. 9-11 became the Pearl Harbor the neocons were pining for.

I suppose that in hindsight perhaps the Atomic bomb could have been first demonstrated on a non civilian target, with the threat of more to come if total surrender did not follow. It would have been easy to demonstrate the massive destruction without taking innocent lives.

Truman decided to put it to the Japanese people. Most of them had nothing to do with the war. I don't know if he considered the demonstration idea. Perhaps there were only a few bombs ready, and they felt that wasting a bomb in a demonstration would be foolish.

Perhaps we learned something from those bombs. That Nukes should never be used again.
