as I thought would happen, the first Canadians off the boat from Beirut are complaining about how bad the boat was. Source is CBC Newsworld this am. They get a free Mediterannean cruise , free airplane ride back to Canada and they are whingeing.

Lorne,

I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not, but back in previous wars, Arabs were planning to attack Israel but Israel pre-emptively attacked instead, and took portions of land from all its neighbours. Gaza was taken from Egypt, the West Bank from Jordon, Golan Heights from Syria, etc. Now, according to international law you can't take someone's land through war. This is spelled out clearly. There was a UN resolution that Israel must withdraw. It never did. Unlike Saddam Hussein who had his army slaughtered like cattle when he invaded a little kleptocratic kingdom called Kuwait, or later had his country destroyed recently when the US started to use the United Nations against him and claimed they had to attack to get him to respect UN authority, and now claim Iran is defiant of the international community, Israel never abided by the resolution that it must withdraw from the land it had taken. Therefore in every sense, they are illegal occupiers. Furthermore, they allowed and even encouraged settlers to move into the best land they had taken, and set up army check points everywhere so Arabs can't travel very far without the permission of the army (although the Jews who are there illegally carry heavy weaponry, and go wherever they want). When something bad happens suspected to be by an Arab, often they punish an entire community with such things as destroying, or illegally confiscating land. Maybe for example the community needs fruit trees to survive on and they destroy them. Children throw stones at soldiers and they are shot -- which has happened hundreds or even thousands of times, but you will never see all these casualties in the National Post or on American TV. All of this is against international law. So, you can see that very clearly there are double standards for Israel and for other countries in the Middle East. The United States has provided Israel, through its veto, immunity before the world for all their violations of international law while at the same time with extreme hypocrasy and self-righteousness it goes after other countries like Iraq or coming up Iran for what it says is defiance of the international community.

BTW, huge hatred has been generated in Muslim countries for the displaced Palestinians who are live in squalor and perpetual limbo in refugee camps, and the Palestinians in illegally occupied territories. Israel is so powerful in almost every sense it is virtually invincible, so the United States makes in its complicity makes an easier target for terrorists who have grown out of this. Now Canada is jumping on the bandwagon, it seems, selling out by seemingly providing Israel with a blank cheque for whatever its does (to Arabs, who are often Muslims). This is unjust, and unfortunately we are an even easier target than the United States. We are going to pay because our politicians have been bribed through political contributions and media influence to apply double standards and support Israel in whatever aggressive actions it takes, also helping in campaigns to destroy the enemies of Israel -- first Iraq, now Lebanon, and just wait for Syria and Iran which are coming into focus.
