The top VC General met with McNamara in the film "Fog Of War" 15 years after the war. He told McNamara the truth, that the VC were not about communism, they were about taking their own country back from foreign invaders. first the French, then the US then as soon as we left, the Chinese. First thing they did after we left was kick out all the Soviets and go to war with the communist Chinese. This proves that communism wasn't what they cared about. The VC General then went on to explain that the South Vietnamese government we backed was a corrupt minority and that it was a civil war with them. We got between the two sides. Just as we're in danger of doing in Iraq. Vietnam and Iraq have many disturbing similarities.
