We can find our self in a situation where there is no 'they' if we get out of their faces.... Perhaps, but simply getting energy independence over time isn't going to accomplish that. Not anytime soon, at least. Over a couple of generations maybe. And over a couple of generations it might dissipate even without energy independence. And then there's the question of whether we can achieve energy independence, let alone with your scheme. And whether US energy independence matters if the rest of the West doesn't do so as well. They're not just mad at us.
