1) Yes Israel has a right to defend itself... 2) ss makes good points though on overkill. I don't deny there is some overkill, but why is it so acceptable to hide 11,000 missiles in the midst of civilian homes? People have missiles hidden under their houses.... The missiles are launched from peoples homes or their yards.... 3) part of my original point was that Israel's supremacy is not guaranteed forever and it would behoove them to work for other resolutions a little harder... Maybe too much attention on the Palestinians and not enough on nurturing Lebanon with a large westernized population... But no country can sit and let someone rain missiles down on their territory. For gods sake think about this if someone had 11,000 missiles and decided to shoot them into Toronto, do you think Canadians would be sharing this rhetoric about being careful of civilians 4) Part deux of my original point was to agree with SS that Mr. Harper was a little quick to jump on the 'Right to defend itself' bandwagon... in that in the world of realpolitik that is a pretty vague mandate... which in Israel's view includes flying over neighbouring airspace to a invade a nations's sovereign airspace and bomb what they perceive just might possibly be a threat... perhaps.. The WMD syndrome... far more dangerous so far than avian flu... Hezbollah sits in Lebanon's government. The killers left Lebanon representing a member party of the lebanese Government, and killed 8 soldiers and kidnapped 2 others. They then returned to Lebanon. For some reason the Lebanese Government didn't offer the Israelis the right to come onto lebanese soil, nor did they offer to bring the Hezbollah to justice. So are you saying that Israel should have simply accepted that Arab Terrorists connected to the lebanese government can attack israelis and israel has no recourse because it would be mean cause israel is tough and Lebanon can't control Hezbollah? You are saying that the lives of the people of Israel have no value compared to the value of the people who are hiding hezbollah in their midst. Better a Jew dies instead of an Arab. Israel could have used Carpet bombing on southern lebanon and turned it into a parking lot. As for Mr harper. All countries have the right to defend their territory, and their citizens. technically lebanon invaded Israel and Murdered 8 people and kidnapped 2. In order that the kidnap victims were not taken out of Lebanon, they bombed the runway, Lebanon didn't leap to help, they claim to be helpless. so what measures were appropriate? How do you stop the missiles, and the bombs and the murders and the kidnappings? The answer is you can't. It isn't possible you cannot stop them. So what is the other option? Israel has always been willing to negotiate peace, Israel was giving back the Gaza strip, and got increased violence for their troubles. So if giving back the land is not an option, cause it makes things worse, what is the next option.
