You can see that they have had military leaders and political leaders who fought wars when they were young men when the Arabs were a threat to them and they were in serious struggle. Now the Arabs are pathetically weak, and the only recourse of any resistence for them seems to be terrorism. This should have brought about a change of tactics -- the self-defence justification of use of force against the Arabs has faded, although they get away with it in the media. The only threat of the Jews is the hatred that allows the terrorism to remain. And outside of the world of Winston Smith's 1984, how can you ever completely stop terrorism through force alone. Israel could have bought peace -- it looked like there was a lot of hope not too long ago. I once worked with a Palestinian who in the 1990's was very enthusiastic about the US honestly brokering a lasting peace agreement. He was all ready to go and set up business in Gaza because the Palestinians are really pretty educated and resourceful people, and he thought a lot could be done. They are not as different from us as you might think -- to some extent a lot of them are descended from the crusaders, many of whom came to the area and never left. Quite a few are Christians. He himself came from a family where everyone was a very high achiever -- surgeons and the like. Then we had the assasination of Yihtzak Rabin in 1995 -- by a Jewish religious fanatic, racial supremicist, and it sounds like there are far too many of these. Since then things have just gone downhill on the Israeli side with people like Ariel Sharon and Benjamin Netanyahoo, who have purposely destroyed peace with the knowledge that the US politicians could be bought off and would not honestly broker any fair peace agreement. Israel would dictate terms and create their own borders because they had all the military power. BTW, this "you started it" thing is not a very good justification for the Jews against the Arabs in this conflict IMO. It might be the way they think, but that kind of thinking is just a recipe for endless escalating tit for tat. At some point someone has to end it by being reasonable and show goodwill to reduce the level of hatred, which is needed to bring about peace.
