Not really. You said XP can be made secure if one knows how. But of course, one has to also install third-party anti-virus software (at a minimum) and keep it updated at all times in order to keep a Windows machine secure.

Wasn't it just a week ago Tuesday that a patch was issued for a vulnerability, which had been used in real-world attacks, that allowed a remote user to gain control of a Windows machine without any action on the part of the machine's owner?
