The FDIC insures up to 750K per bank eh?" $100K, but if the Taxman cometh or someone sues you or if we have hyperinflation.. 100k becomes a zero or effectively a zero.. "Take a month and don't use any cash, credit cards, etc etc and show yourself how long you can exist bartering shiny metal - don't wait until the hurricane comes to test your escape plan." It's not for hurricanes (and where I live it would be a quake..) it's for currency collapse or government collapse and long term investment and/or both. "I see golbugs put thier shiny metal in hard plastic protective cases so they don't get scratched - can't you do that for stamps too?" Then they probably aren't dealing with bullion coins. I treat my gold coins the same way as I treat regular coins. They can survive moisture, mold, mildew, strong direct sunlight, being marked by a pen or paint, etc, whereas rare stamps can not (at least not without surrendering a high percentage of their value..) Strictly speaking I could melt all of them and still get a high percentage of their value. Can't say that for rare stamps. I assure you the gold market is much more liquid than the rare stamp market. If you want me to go into details I can. If rare stamps are your thing, then fine, but they aren't for me. "He did say we have had no more terrorist bombings here in the USA because they have gotten very good at reading your emails and bank accounts no?" Well violent crime has gone up since Bush/Cheney have been in office. Drug dealing got worse in my old neighborhood. (Didn't stop me from getting $400/square foot for my property..) One doesn't need to come to the US to kill Americans, Iraq, Bali, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon... "If it gets to the point where you have to use your pea shooter against the national guards tanks and laser guided missles - you are finished citizen." As I said intelligence and contacts not brute force are the best way to survive if one's government turns against you. My worry is more that other citizens are going to go amok under dire circumstances. You basically seem to be using straw man arguments and believe I am a survivalist. I am not. "You are not part of the goldbug cult?" No. "Canada wouldn't let me come in - and mexico you don't want to go too - no good to jump out of the titanic if you don't have a good yacht to jump into. Why go into a sinking rickety raft that won't delay the inevitable for long?" Well for one I listed more than those two countries. Two, I guess you don't know anyone has fled a country for their life. Frequently your first stop is not your final destination. "I didn't go back the next year and avoided that titanic when the bomb did hit." Can you predict if and when the US economy will experience hyperinflation and/or collapse...? If so I would like to hear it. Yeah I am not big on visiting hurricane prone areas during high season. I did know someone who got out after the hurricane struck. There wasn't much traffic at that point.
