"Take a month and don't use any cash, credit cards, etc etc and show yourself how long you can exist bartering shiny metal - don't wait until the hurricane comes to test your escape plan." It's not for hurricanes (and where I live it would be a quake..) it's for currency collapse or government collapse and long term investment and/or both. "I see golbugs put thier shiny metal in hard plastic protective cases so they don't get scratched - can't you do that for stamps too?" Then they probably aren't dealing with bullion coins. I treat my gold coins the same way as I treat regular coins. They can survive moisture, mold, mildew, strong direct sunlight, being marked by a pen or paint, etc, whereas rare stamps can not (at least not without surrendering a high percentage of their value..) Strictly speaking I could melt all of them and still get a high percentage of their value. Can't say that for rare stamps. I assure you the gold market is much more liquid than the rare stamp market. If you want me to go into details I can. If rare stamps are your thing, then fine, but they aren't for me. Well violent crime has gone up since Bush/Cheney have been in office. Drug dealing got worse in my old neighborhood. (Didn't stop me from getting $400/square foot for my property..) One doesn't need to come to the US to kill Americans, Iraq, Bali, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon... As I said intelligence and contacts not brute force are the best way to survive if one's government turns against you. My worry is more that other citizens are going to go amok under dire circumstances. You basically seem to be using straw man arguments and believe I am a survivalist. I am not. Two, I guess you don't know anyone has fled a country for their life. Frequently your first stop is not your final destination. If so I would like to hear it. Yeah I am not big on visiting hurricane prone areas during high season. I did know someone who got out after the hurricane struck. There wasn't much traffic at that point.
