<what % of the US population is that> Good question -- I am inclined to say that most of us consume more than we should. Overconsumption is the "American way". I am also guilty of this -- we are a very wasteful society. It goes along with believing you are wealthy. As for the exact percentage who are living so far beyond their means that they will go bankrupt I could not say -- I doubt the number will be that high. But the number of people who are forced by economic circumstances to reduce their consumption and change their habits I expect to be the vast majority of the population. This will make people feel 'poor' in comparison with prior feelings of being 'wealthy'.
