monthly retail data put out by the government> Are you serious? <easy to read the retail sales reports of publicly traded retailers.> Worth following, but hardly easy, in fact all over the map. You have largely non-reciever (Brazil America) retailers like Wal Mart, but even that's skewed as most everybody shops there at some point. That's especially true of Costco, probably more a late reciever Bully Wannabee blend. Then you have Bully and Wannabee retailers like COH and JWN. Plus the earnings reports come out in late July- August for sales in April-June, etc, it's lagged. You can get gasoline demand weekly in real time.
