the californian was in the distance as a shadow and the Titanic was firing rockets like no tomorrow so almost everyone assumed that if the titanic did run into trouble, they would have been rescued by the Californian.

There is footage from about 30 years ago of one of the titanic survivors. She is deceased now but was about 10 iirc when the titanic sunk so she was elderly in 1975 but very livid in terms of her remembrance of the experience.

She said that during the inquiry, the authorities concluded that the Titanic couldn't have split but she knew it did (and they dismissed the survivors actual eye witness). Also she said they just knew they would all be rescued and didn't want to be lowered into that scary lifeboat, because they could see the Californian in the distance all the time. I'm sure it probably was scary for people to be lowered down to see from a huge ship like that.

What a story that was though, wow.
