Howdy RR. Hope all is well with you.

The markets sure have been erratic lately. The real job too. <G>

RR,

I assume you've heard the news about Paul Eells sudden passing. I've heard his touchdown calls a few times on national sports broadcasts; it sounds like he was loved by many and will be missed.

The voice of the razorbacks and sports legend Paul Eells is remembered.

Paul Eells and Dover resident, B.J. Burton were killed Monday night (7-31) when Eells' car came over the median on I-40 and struck Burton’s car. Eells was returning home to Maumelle after playing in a charity golf tournament in Fayetteville.

For most Arkansans it was a shocking and unexpected end to the life of a man whose voice had become synonymous with Arkansas sports.

We take a look back at the legend along with fans and friends who remain in state of mourning.

“Touchdown Arkansas,” “Oh My,” “Holy Smokes,” they are phrases that resonate in the hearts of razorback fans.

For the last 28 years, Paul Eells has been the renowned voice of the Arkansas football program. Nearly three decades of one man announcing, to the razorback nation, when someone crosses into the end zone. For many fans it's the only voice they know.

Razorback Fan, Elizabeth Arnold, says, "It’s definitely going to be strange hearing a different voice. They are going to have some big shoes to fill."

Hog Fan, Kevin Blair, describes the pain he felt when he heard the news, "It hurts. It hurts really bad."

Eells is an Iowan by birth but Arkansan by choice.

Radio personality, Ray Tucker, was there when Paul Eells first came to the natural state. "He was very, very unique and touched a lot of lives. Everybody felt like they knew Paul Eells. It was the old thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. They have all been there with Paul. The highs and the lows. He could ride it out with them."

And it's not just football. Eells was also there to help us call the Hogs on the basketball court. He was a well respected journalist for KATV and just this February he was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

However, when asked to describe this Razorback Sports Icon, people rarely talk about sports. Instead everyone talks of his genuine, humble, kind-hearted nature.

Arkansas Head Couch, Houston Nutt, says, “Paul Eells is just perfect, in everyway. He helped guide me through some tough times. I just love him."

Kevin Blair says, "That’s why I’m going to miss him. I have never known anybody ever say anything bad about him. Only good."

Erin Vickers just met Eells a few weeks ago and got his autograph, “I had a five minute conversation with him and I realized he was one of the warmest, most humble people I have ever met in my entire life."

Tucker says, "Paul Eells was a great ambassador for mankind. One of the greatest men god ever put on this planet."

We are told you can't talk of his personality without mentioning his devoted faith in god. As one person put it, "Although we won't be hearing “Touchdown Arkansas” this season, they will hear plenty of it high above Arkansas.”

He is survived by his wife Vickie and there three children. His funeral will be held this Friday at two PM at the Robinson Center.

Another family is also grieving the loss of a loved one. B.J. Burton was also killed in last night's accident. She is survived by her husband Gary Burton and her three children. She too made quite an impact on the lives she touched, especially in Dover.

Memorial services for her will be held at the Dover first Baptist church at one PM on Thursday.

Governor Mike Huckabee called Eells a great man and true Arkansas icon.

In a statement, the governor is calling for flags to fly at half staff this Friday, the day of Eells' funeral. He also asked Arkansans to pray for Paul’s family.

Paul Eells, the voice of the razorbacks, was 70 years old.
