I agree with you that msft is very concerned about losing the entertainment space to apple. Thats why they are doing both the xbox and Zune. For sure, its important. But not as important as Vista, which is FIVE YEARS too late. This is a disaster of epic proportions for MSFT. And it isn't just Vista, the new office suite is also delayed. I'm going to make a bold prediction and say that if MSFT doesn't get a wow-factor Vista out the door by June 07- OS-X is going to gain to 25% share or something. I used to read some of the msft blogs like mini-msft which is a gripe blog for msft employees. Hugely enlightening I suggest people who like apple read it on a lark. Anyway the theme that came across to me is that "nobody who is anybody" at msft is working on Vista. Their group of distinguished engrs at msft (called partners) has their priorities set every 2 yrs and in both 2002 and 2004 there were absolutely ZERO initiatives on their list that had anything to do with Vista. This team of workers makes a million a year at msft. All msft star players are on these new initiatives like xbox and Zune and the problem is, Zune's success is probably in some way MORE dependent on Vista and the fate of Msft as a whole, vs. Zune's own features and functionality. IOW if MSFT implodes ala IBM in 1992, which is a distinct possibility imho, it won't matter how great Zune is, it will go down with the ship. Ballmer should be spending every night and day working on vista and the vista ecosystem. Instead they are diverted to Zune.
