but liberalism (just like conservatism) has a hard time taking hold without a despotic figure. How do we really achieve peace?

I think the founding fathers had the answer. Checks and Balances. Let nobody have the power to get their way all the time. That worked until the rise of the corporations, and they were left out of the power checking.

History is scary and violent in general... I've been reading Balzack lately, and that's led me to researching the French Revolution a bit this evening.

I like to think of liberalism as being able to end many of the world's historical problems, but liberalism (just like conservatism) has a hard time taking hold without a despotic figure. How do we really achieve peace?

I don't think liberalism can bring peace to the world but it would not provoke the kind of violence that has occurred since the neocons seized power in both Israel and the US. The world has become a much more dangerous place since they took over and they openly interfere in the affairs of sovereign nations. They need to be stopped.
