it is a protector of wealth from government confiscation. History does not support your belief - governments have and will confiscate gold if it suits thier needs of retaining control and stopping anarchy and choas as they define it. Mogambo may have a few 50 caliber automatic rifles at his disposal - but next to the USAF yf22 and Army tank I don't see how he wins the war against the gubbment snipers. As for a store of value - you and I are both in the arizona desert - we are very thirsty - I have a bottle of water and you have a gold coin - who has the value? There was a twilight zone episode about this meme - some astronauts thought they had crashed on a far away planet - killed each other trying to get out of the desert - the last survivor found out they had crashed in arizona - HAHA! You exist at the level of comfort you do because of the government around you - there are other governments and places free of government - seems to be lots of death and killing in those places - why not live there? People will take a lot if it means they get to live longer with certain luxuries - no matter the other freedoms they don't have.

The dollars in my checking account are not money ? CD's are not money ? China's reserves are bigger than $740 billion Checking account, CD's, China's reserves are all IOU's. You "money" you deposited in your checking account was loaned out to Joe Sixpack using his heloc. Take a look at any typical bank balance sheet. If everyone wanted to withdraw their "money" from the bank, our entire financial system would collapse. The "money" is long gone. China is sitting on a mountain of promises to pay. They are only worth what someone is willing to pay them or they can wait until maturity and hope they get redeemed. The only true money in our fraudulent fiat monetary system is printed currency. Amazingly, it's rarer than gold.
