The majority wants the Iraq occupation to end. Just a question of how and when. Bush has already thrown in the towel leaving it up to the next president(s).

But yes, if the American public were solidly behind occupying Iraq, the president would have a very hard time not doing what the public wants. He would have to go to the people and offer a counter-argument to convince them.

Bush the lame duck now doesn't care that much what people think. His stem cell veto flew in the face of about 75% opinion. Was that leadership? No, that was just plain brain-dead. It was pandering to one extreme group at the expense of everyone else, and even lying about it.
