There is no prospect of a gold-backed currency in the US, so I don't spend much time thinking about it. Beyond money, what is a really good use for gold that can't be hedonically substituted by something more plentiful and cheaper? I know these hifi audio guys that buy 2000 dollar gold plated cables to get that extra fidelity they claim - my ears never heard a difference. Can't you buy gold cd's and dvd's - they will last longer than the cheap grade stuff I am buying at walmart - but most people I know aren't going for the higher priced gold dvd's. I saw a report on CATERPILLAR that mining is great and lots of people everywhere are increasing thier mining production (except indonesia - a small market for CAT) - they have good expectations for the second half - why all this rush rush rush to dig up shiny golden metal? Where is the demand if not for money? If every gold molecule on this planet VAPORIZED tomorrow - would you and I starve or would life go on? No one is bigger than the market, and if the herd want to buy pet rocks and everyone wear KKK hoods it takes some nutz to go against the other lemmings - gold would be a trade to me - nothing more - but there were many better areas to invest when using the strategies I am currently employing. I look around my room watching stargate atlantis on my monitor and see a gold coin over in my corner collecting dust - every episode of stargate I watch they use guns or trading of technology or food to kill thier enemy or help a friend - they thirst for power to run the city - but they aren't killing for gold or dying from lack of it - strange. The evil Geddi in stargate want medical technology and nuclear technology - don't give a flip about shiny metal - what idiots eh? Reminds me of the chinese that could have sent spies into fort knox to check on or steal our gold - instead they sent spies into weapons and technology companies to steal information - so silly eh? I guess to some there is a kind of emotional satisfaction to look at it once a day. Have you ever read aesop's fables about the miser and his gold?ancienthistory.about.com The Miser and His Gold Once upon a time there was a Miser who used to hide his gold at the foot of a tree in his garden; but every week he used to go and dig it up and gloat over his gains. A robber, who had noticed this, went and dug up the gold and decamped with it. When the Miser next came to gloat over his treasures, he found nothing but the empty hole. He tore his hair, and raised such an outcry that all the neighbours came around him, and he told them how he used to come and visit his gold. "Did you ever take any of it out?" asked one of them. "Nay," said he, "I only came to look at it." "Then come again and look at the hole," said a neighbour; "it will do you just as much good." Wealth unused might as well not exist. Here is the hedonic version - digital gold - hehe - you can look at this one all day long and it never gets dusty like my real coin!
