I wonder what would have happened if Olmert, instead of invading Lebanon, had instead established behind the scenes dialog with Syria, asking: What can we do to establish peace on our norther border and get you to return our soldiers and reign in Hezbullah?

Unfortunately, the appearance of doing nothing public, would have been very poorly received in Israel. Actions are constrained or forced as the case may be by many unfortunate causes.
