Former Democratic Party chairman settles in land scam

SOUTH BEND, Ind. Former Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Peter Manous has agreed to a 125-thousand dollar settlement with a union that sued him over a ten-million dollar real estate scam.

Manous also promises to testify against the three other defendants in the case. He is serving a 27-month sentence in federal prison for his role in defrauding the Carpenters Union pension board in the Coffee Creek land deal.

In 1999, the Carpenters Union pension board decided to buy 55 acres in the Coffee Creek commercial and residential development on Indiana 49 in Chesterton for ten (m) million dollars.

Appraisers later estimated the land's value at the time of the purchase to be five (m) million dollars at best.
