Gasoline is expensive in most parts of the world and consumption of BTU is lower. One liter here costs R$2.43. OrUSD4.19 per gallon (which contains 22% ethanol). And here people are much less afluent than the US consumer. 75% of the Brazilian cars are 1.000cc engines. My 142HP 1.800cc engine car is considered 'big' here.

I wasn't paying close attention to the radio news this morning while shaving, etc., but someone surveyed the guy on the street about his intentions to continue driving, no matter the cost. The overwhelming majority of those asked, said they had no plans to cut back. All you have to do is look at the highways these days to see that survey tells the truth. Scary...
