for LRCX to stop giving it out is a big mistake, in my opinion.

My guess it was OK'ed by key shareholders perhaps even requested - I doubt LRCX blindsighted their big holders suddenly announcing to discontinue giving guidance.
Other might follow - a couple quarters KLAC discontinued to provide mid quarter update.

it certainly looks suspicious. Just more fodder for the bears...
Not really -
they are giving plenty of notice (yes it could back fired but the decision is probably thought through with input of key holders)

we will stop giving bookings guidance effective with our January 2007 conference call.

Just another? What other reasons are there? Lam is, and has been, one of the best run and best performing companies in the sector.
