I had a cousin who worked for NASA as a range safety officer back in the late 50s when we were still trying to get our first satellite in orbit. More often than not, the rocket was blown up before it got too far off the ground. When that happened, my cousin was the one who pushed the button to blow it up. About 20 years ago, my sister and her husband wrote a major software package for the Space Shuttle. I don't know any details, but they still live in Satellite Beach, which is within view of the launches. I saw a launch myself in 1992 from about 20 miles away. It was impressive even at that distance. At the Cape, they have the shells of various rockets on display. When you look at one, you realize they are about 98% fuel. Ain't no way I'm getting in one of those things and letting somebody light it off. No way at all.
