Why should we care if there is peace or no peace? The annual death toll equals one day in many african nations.

There have been periods of progress. And periods of setbacks. Much of it depends on the efforts and perceived balance of the US.

Carter made progress. The peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was a direct consequence of the Camp David Accord.

The same argument could be made for Jordan in the early '90s.

Of course the leaders in the region matter too. If the Palestinians choose leaders like Arafat or Hamas leaders, the Israelis elect Likud party leaders like Sharon or Netanyahu, and some of the Lebonese turn towards Hezbollah - those are all backwards steps and make peace more difficult.

The same is true if the US elects neocons - or neocon controlled idiots<G>.
