Sometimes a company needs to bring in talent from another industry at the top, rather than promote internally, especially if the company is unfocused or has layer after layer of fat, or doesn't have a sensible sustaining culture. A great example is Carl-Henric Svanberg at Ericsson, but certainly Ed is doing the job Moto hired him to do. A year ago I posted this to the TMF Motorola board ==== >> An A for Motorola ... Date: 7/28/05 ... is the letter grade I award them for there 2005 Analysts Day 'Show' ... ... and a well orchestrated 'Show' it was again. Better even then last year because there were results to talk about, not just promises. Ed Zander is great on his feet and he has made sure that his whole team is also. Well scripted and well coordinated presentations were made on stage with plenty of movement not just at a podium in static fashion. I would have awarded an A+ if RAZR wasn't mentioned 9,999 times. Ron Garriques (Mobile Devices) and Adrian Nemcek (Networks) appear to be the right individuals for there positions. David Devonshire (CFO) made a fine presentation and so did Stuart Reed, the new SVP of Supply Chain management out of IBM. The Show can be accessed here: [link busted]tinyurl.com Worth a listen. I left the presentations with the impression that they can make their goals of 13% to 15% operating profit (in mobile devices) if they stick to the plan they are evolving and continue to execute, and that is healthy for the sector and it validates Nokia's targets of 17% to 18% margins in mobile devices and 14% in networks. ### ==== A TMF Moto board contributor then stated ... I'm glad you enjoyed it. A whole host of people (myself included) put a significant number of hours into it. I'm pretty pleased with the results as well. I could identify with that. I'm a show and tell guy that relies on others to help me create props. I spent 15 years of my last 21 years in sales management with a multi-national corporation headquartered in the midwest that was taken private in 1991. As a consequence we had no analyst day, but we did sponsor a very successful annual 3 or 4 day users group meeting on behalf of our user customers. At every level, in every discipline, our headquarters personnel spent 2 months preparing, and in the process they got involved, got motivated, and had fun. All this coordinated by a corporate director of MARCOMM (Marketing Communications) -- a Jeff Belk equivalent, but with real talent. So did our customers when they attended, who were senior executives from some of the largest financial institutions in the US, LA, Europe and Asia, and their transaction processors. Zander brought that to Moto. I have NEVER held a MOT position but I applaud that. Galvin and Mike Z. had put the company on the right track but they were DRY. EDIT: I'm almost an hour into the Moto media event which started late which won't make Ed happy, and we not only have too much Ron, but Ron needs to go on a diet or have his expense account reduced. He has become a pork chop. Slim is in, The RAZR is thin. Ron's not. He is, however, saying some interesting things, in interesting fashion, and really pumping ARM11, which pleases me to no end. Best, - Eric -
