Big gaping hole there - until the conservation crowd addresses how the US keeps growing without a petrol-based regime, they are pissing in the wind. Growth and politics are genetically mixed in America. Friedman hasn't dealt with that awkward fact yet.

He really had my attention, until........... impose a gasoline tax ........... - rather than the welfare-for-oil-companies-and-special-interests that masqueraded last year as an energy bill. Enough of this Bush-Cheney nonsense that conservation, energy efficiency and environmentalism are some hobby we can't afford. I can't think of anything more cowardly or un-American.
