"What's good for GM is good for America"

Almost. What Engine Charlie said was "what is good for the country is good for GM and vice versa".

Give GM it's due. It established the model of a modern car company, build a few "platforms", then sell various bodywork, trim and "image" packages through marketing. Chevy, Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac, etc. Ford copied them with Mercury and Lincoln.

Today, It's Honda/Accura, Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Nissan/Infinity.

GM is far from dead. They may yet adapt and survive.
