That was my point. I don't know why the 'capitalists' and 'free marketers' didn't advocate bribing Iraqis from the get go.

That's what I'm thinking in terms of beating a pipsqueak when you're big and bulky: bribery and propaganda. We've allocated some $400 billion so far and we could have paid Iraqis 10-15 years of their annual income instead of blowing things up.

The rumor was that Japan paid $100 million to the local bigwigs to leave their guys alone. Apparently they wandered around in chinos and polos shirts so as not to appear too militaristic.

I don't think they lost anyone but it did finally get too hot for comfort either in Iraq, at home or both.
