It never occurred to him that the fighters could join the Lebanese army if they wanted to protect Lebanon from Israel?

Hizballah (Hizb Allah, the "Party of God") would have to subordinate themselves to temporal authority, not all of whom would be pure Shia Islamists.

Take them at their own words, this is what they are and what they want to be.

The present government of Lebanon treats them as a paramilitary organization allied with the people of Lebanon.

We believe that nation-states should have a monopoly on force, Islamists don't even believe in nation-states.
