This is Motorola's new handset for the sub $50 market. I am sure that the GSM version will be a bit cheaper than the CDMA version, however the fact that the two versions of handsets will be available simultaneously is very important. In addition to pricing, the low-end CDMA market has suffered from a styling/brand gap with low-end GSM handsets. This Motorola handset should help close that gap.

During their analyst meeting, Motorola made it clear that they expect to pick up a substantial portion of Nokia's CDMA share.

Motorola Introduces MOTOFONE
Tuesday July 25, 4:00 pm ET
New, Market-Defining Mobile Designed to Keep Everyone Connected

ROSEMONT, Ill., July 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News) today announced the MOTOFONE, a new handset poised to redefine the market by making high design and smart technology truly affordable. The MOTOFONE combines Motorola's award-winning design sensibility with smart features and easy functionality. Motorola's thinnest phone yet at approximately 9mm thin, MOTOFONE borrows key elements from Motorola's iconic portfolio and gives them a new twist. Flat keypad, colors, innovative materials and finish processes combine to make a device that's beautiful and affordable for everyone around the world.

As mobile phone markets continue to expand, the demand for cost-effective, smart but stylish communication keeps increasing. Only two billion of the world's population has made a phone call, and billions more have only just begun to leverage wireless communication. With the MOTOFONE, Motorola will empower these new users to embrace mobile communication with confidence and style.

The MOTOFONE offers an intuitive, new interface built on icons and voice versus text. By using images, the device makes it simpler and friendlier for first-time users to navigate, place a call, and retrieve messages. Its large, high contrast screen, powered by our revolutionary ClearVision display, helps eliminate glare from direct sunlight -- making it easier to use the phone outdoors, on-the-go.

"Disruption creates opportunity, and the best way to stay ahead is to create disruption yourself," said Ron Garriques, president, Mobile Devices, Motorola. "That's the philosophy behind the new MOTOFONE. By changing expectations regarding what a phone can look like, feel like, and deliver, Motorola hopes to change the entire playing field for handset development."

Innovative New Materials

Featuring the new ClearVision display, MOTOFONE leverages revolutionary Electrophoretic Display (EPD) technology to provide users with a large, high- contrast screen that is viewable even in bright sunlight. The ClearVision display combined with a flush-fitting keypad and dust-resistant design makes the MOTOFONE sleek yet durable in active everyday use.

Redesigned User Interface

Designed for even the newest phone users, the MOTOFONE is equipped with a newly redesigned user interface that is easy to learn, easy to use. With voice prompt instructions in local languages*, a large readable font size and an icon-based menu, the handset is self-explanatory at every step. For pre-paid customers, the MOTOFONE automatically reports the status of their pre-paid account after each call or message**, allowing consumers to stay in control of use and expense.

Style without Compromise

Proving that uncomplicated, basic functionality and leading edge style can go hand-in-hand, the sleek design of the MOTOFONE includes the features every user wants such as polyphonic ringtones, speakerphone and long-lasting battery life. In addition, the device includes a very powerful loud volume to help ensure callers can hear phone conversations and will not miss calls even in a busy marketplace or crowded street.

Pricing and Availability

The MOTOFONE is expected to be available in the second half of 2006 in both GSM and CDMA models.
