Samsung flash disk aims to boost Vista performance Sean Shim EE Times (07/26/2006 8:29 AM EDT) SEOUL, South Korea — Samsung Electronics said Wednesday (July 26) its 4-Gb solid state disk will serve as a high-speed NAND flash cache for notebooks and PCs running Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. The disk is ready for production and complies with Windows ReadyBoost, a new Vista feature that uses flash memory to improve system performance. "By caching hard-drive data using Samsung's flash SSD and [Vista], a typical user will see performance gains that will make working with their PC lightning fast," Don Barnetson, director of flash marketing for Samsung Semiconductor (San Jose, Calif.), claimed in a statement. ReadyBoost populates the disk with frequently used data and readies users' favorite applications and data in the background, accelerating the launch of applications. Samsung's device works in tandem with a hybrid hard drive as a secondary source of cached data, according to Samsung. The flash device can be mounted nearly anywhere on the motherboard and is connected through the ATA port. Since Vista automatically compresses data stored in a ReadyBoost device, the drive will also handle up to 8 gigabytes of user data.
