For decades, all the way back to the 1940s, the US was seen as a fair broker in the Middle East. Sure, we were going to support Israel's right to exist and sure, we wanted Arab oil...but we could be relied upon to be first in line to begin to broker what needed to be done when things got hot. Without everyone coming unglued (cause maybe you think we never should have undertaken that role, or it cost us more than it gained) have we lost the role? Should we?
