Seems to me like this is either an innate talent, or a talent which is taught to young people, or a talent achieved by trial and error by older people, any of the three.

That used to be taught. If not taught, at least held up as a desirable skill. I remember debating in classes when you were assigned a side to argue or had to argue both. I think that nowadays there's more emphasis on personal expression rather than argument.

Interesting too, is the effect of the anonymity afforded by the net, as well as the safe distance involved.

I strongly suspect that 95% of the vituperation flung about on these forums would disappear if the posters were brought together in the same room.

Odd that, and perhaps worthy of a study by those more learned in such matters than I.
