Oil companies make much more than 50 cents a gallon. They control the entire pipeline from ground to pump. The gas they produce at $3.50 costs the same to them as it did under Clinton when it cost us $1.75.

How dare you lie to the thread with a dishonest claim like that. Exxon just made the biggest profits in the history of the planet. That was directly juiced by their massive gouging. And it all started the day after Bush-Cheney were first nominated.

Also, it's already PROVEN the GOP politicians can bring down the price of gas 50 cents in one day. Hastert (and democrats in congress) did it by ordering the Big Oil Fat cats in for a grilling. A few Republicans even said the words "windfall profits taxes" and "break-up of monopoly" and sure enough the price of gas plummeted. But it went straight back up against once Hastert caved in to Big Oil and proved it was all for show.

No accident that when democrats were in charge we had $1.75 gasoline and health care was 50% cheaper as well.

>>The oil companies don't make a profit of 50 cents per gallon of gasoline. <<

Tim -

Yes, Tim, they do. They make around a dollar a gallon just at the refining stage. And they make money at various other points in the process, from pumping the stuff out of the ground to pumping it into your tank.

Honestly, do you think the record profits the oil companies are making come from nowhere?

Just check out one of their annual reports.

Exxon controls oil-gas from ground to pump. It costs them no more to make a gallon of gas now that it did 6 years ago when it cost us half the price.

The main difference between now and then is that Exxon's cronies now control the US government and refuse to police any kind of gas gouging whatsoever. Sure, there may be other minor factors, but at least one dollar of what you pay now is pure gouging and manipulation, in concert with other big energy companies including Bush-Cheney's close pals the Saudis and OPEC.

Like Bill O'Reilly says it's a monopoly and they are greedy immoral MF's screwing us to the wall. It's O'Reilly's one claim to fame, the fact that he as a conservative has seen through the lies and thievery of big oil. But O'Reilly still won't make the obvious connection to the Bush-Cheney regime.
Look at a graph of price spikes and Bush-Cheney coming into power though and you'll see the timeline matches exactly.

I don't have the numbers right now but I did hear an energy expert explain on the radio that even if gasoline was priced at half today's levels, the oil companies would still make a decent profit.
