We did not broadly attack Muslims Similarly, they did not broadly attack America or the West. They did indeed "broadly attack America". You attack a sovereign nation and kill thousands and you have attacked the whole nation. They also broadly attacked the west. London, Madrid, Bali (not exactly west geographically but Australians where the main target, and despite their location they are part of "the west") etc. And before 9/11 they had attacked embassies and a warship. Was the attack on Pearl Harbor just an attack on the US Navy and not the country as a whole? Hardly, and 9/11 killed more people than 12/7/1941.
