Laz, this may explain some of the mixed accounts. In response to Pal provocations, Israel launched an armed incursion into Lebanon in 1978, and withdrew 2 months later. In 1982, after enduring continuing attacks, the IDF mounted a full scale invasion and subsequent occupation of southern Lebanon which only ended in withdrawal in 2000. The air battle I previously mentioned over Bekaa in the opening phase of operations was closely watched by the major powers because it was considered a proxy air war between the best American fighter aircraft vs the best Russian counterparts. Ours were better. But the Israeli pilots were in a whole different class from the Syrians. They still are. Here's a quick read (from the Israeli viewpoint):
