Richard Perle vs. Condi Rice? No worries.

Condi's in, Perle's out. Right-wingers *love* Condi.

I think the subtext of that article is that Gingrich is positioning himself to the right of Bush for a 2008 run.

Perle and the other hard-liners are the bozos who gave us the war in Iraq. The American people are not panting and throbbing with the desire to give them a second chance (probably not Gingrich, either).

Remember, when Bush was elected, his big thing was setting up free trade zones and education reform. He planned on being "the education president" and promised that the US would not be "the policeman of the world."

He got swept up into this hard-line stuff by Cheney and the other AEI (American Enterprise Institute) neocons and desk-hawks after 9/11.

He's a lot more comfortable with Condi's style, and I think most of the American people prefer it, as well.

But if the Dems run somebody to the left of Howard Dean and war breaks out with Iran -- who knows?

I don't see it, but anything is possible.

I thought I'd never see a discouraging word written about Rice.

This morning's news was all over the terrific performance by Rice at the Italy meeting yesterday with the ME, Europe etc.
All of them who were calling for a cease fire etc. The media was surprised how well she stood up to the Europeans.

I agree with the posters who believe this is mostly Gingrich posturing for '08. Perle et al are just like the others who need to get face time for the purpose of receiving a nod for a cabinet position after the election.

IMO, Gingrich would hold up well in the debate as he is pretty glib and smarter about history and policy than most candidates. However, I don't see him getting elected. Too much baggage and negativity would come from the press.
