AnnTaylor Stores July Same-Store Sales Rise 5.1 Percent, but Miss Wall Street's Forecast

NEW YORK (AP) -- Women's clothing retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corp. said Thursday that July same-store sales climbed 5.1 percent but missed Wall Street estimates by a wide margin.

Same-store sales, a closely watched indicator of retail strength, measure sales at stores open at least a year.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected sales to surge 9.1 percent, according to Thomson Financial.

Total sales in the four weeks ended July 29 jumped 12.6 percent to $156.7 million from $139.1 million in the year-ago period.

AnnTaylor's flagship Ann Taylor brand of stores reported a 1.4 percent gain in same-store sales, while total sales were flat at $58.7 million. The company's discount Loft stores had 8.3 percent higher same-store sales and 21 percent higher total sales of $80.2 million.

AnnTaylor plans to report second-quarter earnings Aug. 18.
