"a well-marked identified structure" Little doubt about that fact. "How could the observers abandon their posts without orders????" Would be interesting to know if they ever asked their chain of command for permission to abandon their post. (If reports are correct that the Israelis assured them 'several times' that the 'bombardment would be stopped' when they called... then perhaps that would help to explain why they remained at that post. That, and the fact that it might have been even less secure OUTSIDE the fortifications, where there were no assurances at all that anyone on the ground wouldn't be targeted.)
