"Yesterday, we noted that Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Michael Steele (R) admitted to being the anonymous candidate highly critical of the Republican party quoted in a Washington Post story written by Dana Millbank. In the story he said being a Republican "was like wearing a 'scarlet letter' and that he did not want President Bush to campaign for him this fall."

During a radio interview yesterday (audio available), Steele said he was surprised to see the quotes in print and even suggested they were "taken out of context."

Today, the Maryland Democratic Party sent Political Wire a copy of an email between Steele's communications director and Millbank giving approval for use of Steele’s quotes and discussing the terms of the story. The email makes clear Steele's campaign knew about the story in advance and was even given the opportunity to approve the quotes in the story.
