I know there were advisors there much earlier,, : after 1954 geneva convention to divide VN into north and south, USA had MAAG ( military assistance and advisory group) with about 400
personel ( administrative & support staff and officers) - when the war was escalted, MAAG was named MACV Military assistance command in VN when the USA troops went into search and destroy
campaign and operations .... BUT one has to remember that war in VN is a testing ground for american weapon system versus the
russian and chinese, and the testing ground for the conventional war versus the guerilla warfare. USA lost the battle because of the antiwar lefties
