Carter tried, but Reagan made deal with the Iranians to hold the hostages until Reagan was elected. Shame on him.

That's an old lie from the 1980's. The Dems even had Congress "investigate" the conspiracy theory. Supposedly William Casey who'd been in the OSS/CIA and George Bush (the elder) were involved and Bush personally flew some high tech spy plane to Paris to attend one of the conspiratorial meetings.
