Palestinian prime minister collapses during speech
Sat 7 Oct 2006

PALESTINIAN prime minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas collapsed yesterday during a speech to an outdoor rally in Gaza City.

Mr Haniyeh slurred some words, then stopped speaking in mid-sentence and fell on aides surrounding him. He was put on a chair as aides attended to him.

The speech was delivered to tens of thousands of supporters on a hot autumn day and Mr Haniyeh, 46, is fasting, like all observant Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.

He resumed his speech after several minutes.

"Our bodies can get tired, but our soul will not, ..." he said of the incident.

During the speech, he said Hamas would not be forced out of power, accept a compromise or recognise Israel.

...

The Hamas leader also ruled out a proposal by members of his own movement to form a new government of technocrats that might receive international support and end a seven-month aid freeze.
