It transcends "liberal and conservative". Those big multinationals want to be sucking up to the government no matter who is in power. The "libral media" came out of conservative anger against the editors and reporters who aggressively reported on Nixon. Interestingly enough, it was under Nixon that the wheels began turning to allow for media consolidation, removal of the fairness doctrine and the situation we have today.

Simple - First, corporate ownership and editorial/news policy are two different things. Owners are mostly interested in financial returns.

Second, why can't corporations be liberal? Well, they can be and some are more liberal and and some more conservative than others. That depends on their management.
