Re: "squirm out of acting responsibly."

They are 'acting' like they are 'responsible' for their OWN sovereign concerns... such as: securing energy supplies for their own growing economy (signing oil deals with Uzbekistan, gas deals with Iran...), and they don't mind poking us in the eye at the same time. :-)

PS --- they did not say that the 'bombing' was a precipitant cause for their 'linking' of the Iran/nuclear issue to other current events. They said the 'current anger in the Islamic world' was their rationale, inplying that the wars in Iraq and Lebanon were both a factor in creating the current climate --- and in, possibly, altering the way they might vote on Iran/nuclear issues in the SC.

Russia, of course, has several of it's *own* reasons to act 'pissed'... not the least of which is the US very recent nixing of their decades-long campaign to join the WTO.

And my thoughts on the situation: expect no 'help' from EITHER of them on most ANY international matter we are looking for their help on --- until after Bush has left office:

Re: "Screw the Chinese" & "Nonsense...."

What is 'nonsense'?

The fact that they publicly linked the two issues (signaling that these developments may affect their votes with regard to the Iran/nuclear situation)?

Afraid that's a Chinese decision, so the issues are 'linked' in their minds if they believe they are. (And, of course, they --- and as I refer to below, Russia --- both have vetoes in the Security Council... as I'm sure you well know.)

See my comments on the situation below. (You may find you don't disagree with my accessment of current affairs quite so much... and, I've LONG favored a tougher approach toward China):

BOTH the problem of Iran working towards nuclear weapons status, AND the problems posed by the already nuclear-armed North Korea, will likely go WITHOUT significant help for the US coming from other nuclear super powers like China and Russia --- probably for the balance of this administration's remaining time in office.

They have *both* apparently decided 'screw 'em, we can wait the Bush administartion out'. China now contracting with Iran, and Russia with Venezuela, Iran, etc., etc.

Both China and Russia are no longer 'friends' or 'allies'... despite whatever Bush thinks he saw in Putin's 'soul', and despite Bush's repeated candy kisses to China by REFUSING to label their currency manipulations an 'illegal trade restraint' while they lap up our markets and sap our enterprises.
