I recall media both print and broadcast from 30 years ago very well because I was immersed in it at the time. The amount of cheap filler material has increased exponentially. It is hard for consumers to notice, because one is not aware of the investigative pieces that were never produced, the public service campaigns that were never run in either print or on the air, the local coverage that never happened. Cheap syndicated material such as the latest "Brad and Angelina" gossip, costs big chains almost nothing. However it is expensive to hire and pay intelligent, talented reporters and editors who may spend weeks working on an investigative piece that contains useful information. Plus when the big story runs, it may draw lawsuits and legal expenses anyway.
Television example: Wall to wall coverage of the Michael Jackson court antics. Extremely cheap to run that kind of worthless material. You pay a reporter and cameraman to sit outside the courthouse all day and do standups. It is often a financial decision. Ownership does make a huge difference in what a news organization produces.

But I will come back to my original point, it is immaterial whether multinational media owners are conservative or liberal. If they always want to be on the side of the government in power, we have... Pravda.
