As I understand from the two reviews I've now read of Thomas Ricks' book, he argues that one of the major problems with the Iraq invasion/occupation was they forgot the Vietnam lessons.

I'm developing a serious desire to read it; may just hope in the car and head out to Barnes and Noble rather than wait a week or two for the library copy.

It's not clear from the reviews I've read just what lessons Ricks has in mind.

But, just for myself, it's about as clear as possible, that the sole reliance on force is a failure and should be so seen by anyone who looks at Iraq and now at Lebanon and, for that matter, at Lebanon through the 90s. It has to be force within diplomacy.

I liked the Gelb piece. I would love to see more such bandied about.
